These are all good. Numbers 1, 11, 17, and 18 are great.

great roundup! i personally would not have learned much about email marketing, but it was a big requirement of a job. well after many campaigns, i found that the return on an email is much larger than any social networking push.

Totally agree, if all else fails an email list is the vital thing that you can fall back on.

A boring marketing job is often a great place to learn skills for your music career…that’s what I did.

Chris, what a GREAT list! You are spot on with every item. I will be passing this along to my peeps.

Most important items on your list:

    1. So right! People don’t scroll. You have seconds to make an impression. Have your most important stuff on the page before you scroll.

    2. I’m surprised how many artists either don’t have a mailing list sign up form or I have to search all over for it. Make it easy to find on every page.

    4. This is very important! Always join your own mailing list so 1) you can see what everyone else sees and 2) you can make sure it’s working properly. Same goes for purchasing your music online. Have you bought your music from yourself? Make sure it works! If there is a problem, you are losing sales!

    7. Big red lettering is a no brainer. Make your offer stand out.

    8. This one is very important. Whatever you offer must be available immediately after the sign up. I find both the confirmation page AND a follow up email works best. Confirmation page is important because your email can very easily wind up in the spam folder.

    11. I’m amazed how few artists walk around after their set, asking people to join their mailing list. Here is what works… the band’s front person should arm themselves with CDs in one hand and a clipboard with their mailing list in the other. Walk around and talk to everyone. Ask if they would like to buy a CD. Ask if they would like to join your mailing list. You’ll be amazed when you ASK. Don’t assume everyone will walk over to your merch table and do it on their own.

    12. I’m rarely asked to be placed on a mailing list. Artists typically just just do it – wrong! Just because an industry person talks to you doesn’t mean you should automatically add them to your list. Ask first! Get a photo taken with them then email it saying it was great to meet you. Then ask if you can add them to your mailing list.

    26. Personalization is very important. People respond great to it.

I always say try things and see what works for you. What works for one band might not work well for you and vice-versa. If you follow Chris’ list, you will get tremendous results. That I can guarantee.

    Keep rockin’!

Hey Madalyn, thanks so much for stopping by.

Your blog has become one of my “must reads” recently, seems like we agree on a lot of things.

Love you method for getting emails at shows. Very cool!

I’ve added GoGirlsMusic and your blog to my music marketing resource list. (Both well deserved!)
