To get a record deal or to not get a record deal, that is the question?
Well I think the key thing is not to chase it or focus all your effort there because it’s kind of like winning the lottery.
It can often be great to get the injection of cash that a deal can bring to help with marketing and promotion. But if you only focus on that it is unlikely that you will build enough fans and enough buzz to impress someone enough to take a chance with you.
Labels today are looking for a complete package. I’m talking songs, album sales, fan lists, image…EVERYTHING.
So my advice is to forget about a deal and focus on your DIY marketing tactics like building your mailing list to 1000 people.
That way you will be in a great position to negotiate when the label comes calling. You can then use their money to put your music marketing into the fast lane.
The next step is to read the post below which features a veteran of the music industry talking about the current state of the record deal.
Enjoy,
Chris
