How to Get Fans’ Attention in a Web of 155 Million Sites

Getting people to actually take notice of what you are doing is one of the most important things for any musician.

You could have the best album since “Barney’s Greatest Hits” but nobody is going to bat an eyelid if you can’t make yourself heard in the tidal wave of information that is battling for your fans’ attention each day.

You must be able to get people looking in your direction, if you want to turn the occasional listener into fans, and the fans into fanatical supporters of your work.

Cunt Bag! Ahhhhh!

Did that get your attention?

Good, now we can look at how you can do the same thing, and it’s not all about using the C word. So stay tuned…

First thing’s first…let’s take a journey into the human mind!

Although the mind of your perfect fan is a very clever and complex thing, it cannot fall in love with every piece of music it hears.

The mind was made to focus on a few things at a time and ignore most other things completely.

Think about when you walk down the street, there are a million and one things you could notice, but you can walk for a mile or more and only pick up on the smell of freshly baking donuts coming out of the local coffee shop.

This seems to be a clever bit of evolution which selectively makes us ignore all but the most important things for our current goal.

In this case the goal would be to stuff your face with a lovely fresh cream donut…YUMMA!

So what on earth does all this “brain talk” have to do with getting people to listen to your music?

Well…you need to be like that scrumptious donut in the mind of your perfect fan, and give her/him a reason to listen above the millions of other songs online…not an easy task but it can be done.

Begin Project Mind Invasion!

Below you will find 3 easy ways to infiltrate the mind of music fans and get maximum attention…in the wrong hands these powerful strategies could be dangerous…you have been warned :-)

Stories. People love you to tell them an honest and interesting story about your music career. This will get them more involved in your music and make a deeper connection in the mind. Think about Michael Jackson…I have not researched this bit, but right away I can tell you he was a child star with the Jackson 5, then went on to massive solo fame after moon-walking all over the Grammys, set his hair on fire, slept in an oxygen tank, spent millions on plastic surgery, dangled his baby out the window and then suddenly died after announcing that he was going to play 52 shows back-to-back in London. What can your fans say about you?

Target Fans Correctly. A wise man once said that if you want to sell 200 burgers all you need is a hungry crowd, and if you keep this little mantra in mind you’ll find it much easier to get attention. Don’t just target country music fans, target the fans of the singer that you sound most like, and they will be 100 times more likely to give you their attention because they will feel an almost subconscious connection with you right off the bat.

Get the blood boiling. If you can connect with any of the big human emotions you will have the chance to get and keep attention for a longer period of time. Think about that “My Heart Will Go On” song from Titanic. When people hear that tune all they can think about is cute little Leonardo Dicaprio sinking down dead into the icy water…absolutely heartbreaking! ;-) Make people angry, piss them off, stir up feelings of love, make them laugh…

Attention Is Short Lived

Once you have the attention of your perfect fan you need to use it to create a way to follow up with them so that you can continue to build a deeper and deeper connection over time.

Don’t make it confusing or spend all day working on some snazzy website. If you get their attention then show them something crap they will not grant you access to their mind next time!

“He who controls the email is in the position of power”

I think Yoda said that! And that little green dude is a very clever music marketer indeed!

This Is Only the First Step

You may remember that at the start of this article I said a very bad word. I’m sorry mother…

But if I had not followed it up with some concrete information to help your career, then you would have just thought of me as a potty-mouthed fool and probably never set foot on my blog again!

…you need to keep that in mind for your own attention-getting efforts.

There is no point getting your bass player to run naked down Main Street if your music is bad and your songs sound like they have been recorded in a public bathroom.

Doing that is like getting their attention only to make them look at a smelly, stinky, warm, wet…TURD!

And nobody wants to look at that my friend!

Talk soon,

- Chris
