How To Make Money From Your FREE Music Offer?

Everyone in the world is telling you that you should be giving away your music to entice happy little fans onto your mailing list?

But hang on one gosh darn minute!

The landlord is smashing down the door for his rent, and good food and alcohol costs money…

So what to do?

In this post I’m going to show you that you can give all your music away for nothing and still make an income. This all comes down to one controversial little word…advertising!

The Self Liquidating Free Music Offer

Lot’s of people think that ads are the route of all evil, but let me ask you a question.

If you were on fire and you saw an ad for a “put out my body fire instantly” service, would you moan? Nope!

This is where Google comes in…

I love Google, they make buckets of cash everyday and are one of the most successful companies in the world, but I still love them. Their Maps, Gmail, Android, Chrome…. it’s all great.

They’re an outstanding example of the theory that if you give people something amazing for free they will not mind looking at a couple of ads along the way.

But where Google make the most green is from advertising, and their system is the most advanced ad serving platform in the world. Basically they work out what your fans will probably be into and then show them ads that closely match it.

That’s why I like to use Google ads for a free music offer, because you simply place a couple of highly relevant “sponsors” on your music download page and each time a fan clicks through you make a nice little bit of income.

This is not going to make you a millionaire but it all helps right?

The steps below will get you started but I’ve also included a detailed tutorial video below.

  • Sign up for a Google AdSense account.
  • Create your ad. (This is not my video but the kid does good.)
  • Install the easy privacy policy plug-in on your blog which makes your site AdSense compliant.
  • Create a password protected page on your blog and upload your free music offer.
  • Now copy your AdSense code into the page.
  • Go over to your email list provider and set your welcome message to give fans the password to your download page.

Simple!

Now everyone who signs up will see a couple of ads, and if they click you get paid.

In my opinion nobody is going to feel weird about this if you provide them something really cool for free but this is totally up to you.

Go ahead and make some money if you want :-P

Great read Chris! I was always curious but didn’t realize setting up an AdSense account was that effortless. Definitely need to get started there. This is a great idea that will help artists make some extra cash. Paying the rent is good! The video podcasts are really engaging too, btw.

Wow thanks Jim, thats high praise coming from you :-)

Just doing my bit, if people don’t want to pay for music then we need to think of clever wasy to get around it without making the site look like a pitch-fest.

    Talk soon,

You’re not technically allowed to say “please support our music by checking out our sponsors” near adsense ads, anything that encourages users to click is against Google’s TOS and can result in you getting your account banned or them not paying you. Just a word of warning…

Still have them up though, as Adsense can be a good way to earn money.

Hey thanks for stopping by Shaun I really love your blog.

You’re right of course, offering an incentive to click on an add will get you canned from adsence.

I have updated the article to avoid any confusion.

    Thank again,

    - Chris
