In this article I want to pull back the curtain and show you how I go about music marketing on the Internet.
My method is a little different to most because I don’t spend hours every day friending people on myspace, and calling recording companies to try and get them to sign me.
The ideas is that you spend 80% of your marketing time working on making great music and then have a simple system to promote it on lots of websites automatically.
What you will find is that once your music gets to a stage where people really find it interesting, they will do all the music marketing for you!
Sound good?
There is really no point trying to force success until the market tells you you’re ready.
So here is the process Marketing Music on the Internet I use…
1. SONGWRITING
First you need to create a habit for making better and better music everyday. I give myself half an hour in the morning to get down ideas.
2. RECORDING
Then you need to record that music and make it sound good enough to play on radio. I use a simple recording blueprint and do everything on Garageband which is quick and cheap.
3. MARKET LEADERSHIP
You need to set up a publishing network on posterous where you will track everything that is going on in your music scene. You can use google reader to keep up to date on your market and the posts will also bring you traffic from your web 2.0 sites.
This is a great way to uncover new promotion opportunities.
4. VIDEO PUBLISHING
Once your recording is complete you should post it out to tube mogul, this will put your video on lots of video sharing sites and you can even use your blip.tv feed to create an Itunes video podcast automatically.
5. BLOG
Once you have your stuff on YouTube you should make a blog post on your website which will be up set to automatically post out to people on your mailing list. You blog should also go to ping.fm which updates all your social networks at once.
Marketing Music on the Internet – How will you know when your stuff is working?
- When you post a video on YouTube and it gets more than 5000 plays in one day.
- When you have 2500 people a day coming to your website.
- When your have 1000 fans on your mailing list who have each paid for at least five products from you.
I know that you may be impatient to have music success but you should feel happy that your making great music everyday and giving the world the chance to like it.
This is a simple system and it does not take you hours a day to use.
The thing that makes it work is the constant momentum, and the fact that record companies and managers come to you with offers instead of you having to go begging yourself.
