Unmissable Music Marketing Hacks for 2012

Happy new year my muso friends,

The other day I got an email from Bob Baker (“The Godfather” of music marketing) asking me for a few words on how I think the music biz is going to go in 2012.

Well you know what they say…when the Godfather makes you an offer you can’t refuse, it’s time to start typing!!!

The problem is Santa Clause forgot to bring my crystal ball so I decided to just let Bob know what I’m going to be doing this year ;-)

Hope it gives you a little bit of focus, and when you’re finished with this the real “Unmissable” stuff can be found at the links below. Because Bob has also spoken to a whole bunch of other music marketing ninjas, who throw out the Crown Jewels of music marketing success!!!

Two things that me and my clients will be going big on in 2012…

1. Online fanclubs - you deliver all your new music and videos into a private membership site and fans pay for access. There will of course be different payment levels for people who would like access to more content.

2. Musicians making money through ads - my experience is that one of the biggest problems musicians face is actually getting fans to pull out the cash and buy something…so why not skip that step! Just Focus on producing the best music and most interesting content that will attract lots of hits to your site. Now you just put a simple “Google Adsense” banner in the sidebar of your site…and every time someone clicks the banner you get paid. Not a massive amount but it all ads up.

…Google Adsense will probably not pay your rent but it’s easy to set up, the real concept here is that you attract the eyeballs and then advertising companies pay you for a share of your hits. This is how most popular websites online make money so your fans won’t think it’s strange to see an ad or two for something cool.

The reason I love both of these models is that they simplify the process for you and the fans because everything is delivered online at no extra cost to you. With the ads you don’t even have to sell anything!

I’ve eaten too much Christmas turkey over the last couple of days so I may be rambling slightly but I hope you kind of get the idea, I’m really excited about the new year and I’m happy to help you out in any way I can.

    Chris,

I enjoy reading your site, but the suggestion to put Google AdSense ads on a band site is unlikely to be effective.

Setting up websites that are monetized through AdSense has been part of my day job over the past 8 years, and I know pretty well how much money you can make with this. One click typically makes between $0.02 and $0.25, depending on the niche.

Most websites need something like 2,000 unique visitors daily to make $15-$20 a day, and these are sites with often hundreds of search engine optimized pages, with AdSense ad blocks in highly strategic locations – and not in the side bar which, as surveys show, is a very poor place if you want to get clicks. I’m afraid many band sites do not even attract 2,000 unique visitors monthly.

Which ads are featured is determined by the software after reading the content of the web page. You have to be lucky to get ads that are closely related to your band. And if it’s not related, only very few people will click.

Just wanted to let you know about this.

Hope you have a great 2012!

I think it is an interesting tactic to make bands seem illusive and exclusive.  A band should probably give themselves and their work away for free before they are at the point where they can even consider having a fan club.

Most bands are shocked with people walk up to them and buy them a beer for such a great set.

It is important to teach bands to take baby steps, because it could be 10 years and a lot of hell before a band can attract enough traffic with google ads.

But this is still a really great post!

Well, I’m excited to read your update for the second one. I have the same sentiments as Swanski. If bands only post updates about their tours, practices, new album, etc and if they’re not yet famous, chances are their sites wont be flocked by readers. For it to work, they should be as good in writing(and SEO) as they are with music. Their content must be so exceptional with lots of gimmicks (videos, giveaways, etc). Would love to know how you can make a band’s website profitable as a website.
