Music Promotion Companies – A Big Warning to You

Music promotion companies can seem like a great way to get your music out there without you having to do all the work. And for bands with a budget I highly recommend you stick to what you’re good at and let others handle the promotions stuff.

But there is a darker side to music promotion companies that I have been though myself. This is kind of a warning that you should never take your hands off the wheel completely because you can loose your shirt.

The main thing to remember is that you should do your own promotion at first and learn everything you can about marketing. That way if your music promotion companies are doing stupid work you will be able to point it out and sack them!

*Marketing tip: If you want to sell a lot of burgers all you need is a hungry crowd. There are also hungry people out there looking for music everyday, and if you can mould yourself into the kind of act they like, marketing your music will be so easy.

Music Promotion Companies – Marketing Tips

Most bands just play what they want and never think about who they might appeal to.

So anyway, back to my horror story about music promotion companies.

It was four years ago and I was about to release my first every album, which cost me $10,000 of my own money to make.

After recording was over I had a little bit of my budget left. My manger at the time suggested we get a press officer to handle the promotion in the build up to release.

I was really tired so I agreed and we had regular meetings with the company (who will remain nameless) full of positive feedback and promises that we would have full coverage in all the music magazines.

Well I think you know where this story is going, because when the album came out we only had one crappy online review and no other press at all!

This meant no distribution and no CD sales. I still have the CDs in my basement today :-(

Final thoughts.

This is a common story and has a simple solution….

Ask your music promotion companies to work on results and try not to pay anything upfront.

If they really believe in your stuff then they should be willing to help your out.

It’s very easy to blame the music promotion company for your lack of success. Major record labels have only a fraction of a % success rate. You should play music because you like to not because you think your’re going to be a big rock star lol…Get a Real Job loser

LOL thanks for your thoughts Bruce.

I agree that if you wait for a record deal your career will dry up after a while.

My thinking is now that it’s best to get out there and start to build your fan list on your own.

This is really a good information because most of the people are familiar with the brighter side of these music promotion companies thanks for showing the darker side.
