I believe that one of the most important things for any musician, is to set yourself up as the best source of information in your scene. You can then leverage that relationship to build a loyal fan base and shift some records.

After a while you will have targeted fans visiting your site everyday just to see what’s going on. It’s like a fog being lifted…you’ll seem to have a super human sense for what’s new. So any time something happens you need to be all over it like an infectious rash, and once you start to follow this process you will also notice under the radar opportunities and can be first to act.

In simple terms you just sniff out the latest and greatest news and let people know about it on your blog, Twitter and Facebook pages. Kind of like becoming your very own living breathing music magazine.

But How do you Do this?

In the past I have talked about the “Google Music Alerts” method for tracking what’s going on, and you can also use the tactic in this video to subscribe to every blog you can find related to your music scene.

But there is a BIG problem with this…Information Overload!

It used to take me two hours a day on average to keep track and get involved with everything. But then I found a simple little tool that has cut the job down to 20 minutes… BOO YARR!

Welcome to Instapaper

If you use your Google Reader time to go through every little thing that catches your eye it will suck hours away like a blood thirsty leech. But sending the best of the best to Instapaper lets you burn through everything at warp speed then post out the most newsworthy stuff when you have time.

It even makes standing in line at the post office, or waiting for a bus productive because you can post out interesting news to your fans using your smart-phone.

Just give it a go and see if it works for you…

Here are the steps

Sign up for an Instapaper account

Go into Google Reader settings and click “Send To” then put a tick next to Instapaper…

Next go through your Google Reader news and “send” the best stuff to Instapaper…

Now you just need to read through Instapaper when you have time; if the article is cool, re-post a snippet to your blog with a link back to the article source and also put the best stuff out to Twitter and Facebook.

Do this everyday and in a couple of months you will have targeted fans following your updates just to get the latest news. Now you need to let these people know how cool your music is too, and offer them a great reason to join your list.

Once you have completed your “become the center of everything” system each day, spend the rest of the time creating new tunes and writing your own blog posts. That’s the really important stuff, because it turns casual readers into long term fans.

This process has really helped me save time, and I’d love to hear if you’re feeling it too.

Let me know below,

- Chris

I am a total fan of Instapaper. There is so much stuff out there, these days the difficulty isn’t getting to know information, it’s managing all the available information you have access to. Instapaper is great for that. I get it sent to my mail software, so I have a list of all the pages I’ve saved and go through them as quickly as going through my emails.
